"One of the famous seven deacons (Acts 6:5). Since he was a Hellenist (a Greek-speaking Jew), as a deacon he was to serve under the apostles (6:6) by taking care of the neglected Hellenist widows and the poor in general in the Jerusalem church. He was an evangelist and performed signs and wonders among the people (8:39; 8:6). Philip preached in Samaria with great success, cast out devils, and healed the paralytics and the lame just as the apostles did (ch. 8). Some of his converts were Simon the sorcerer of Samaria (8:9-13) and the Ethiopian eunuch (8:26-40). Thus perhaps Philip was instrumental in introducing Christianity into Africa." (THE NEW INTERNATIONAL DICTIONARY OF THE BIBLE, ¬© 1987 Zondervan, p. 781)
